Making the Best of Human Life…

Let’s face it.  Life on earth isn’t always easy.  In fact, most of the time is pretty challenging.  We deal with job losses, disappointments, cancer, troubled relationships, obesity, death, natural disasters; the list is never-ending.  We work so hard in attempt to cReAte and control an ideal surrounding, but nothing will ever be perfect…

because we are HuMaN

because we are SiNnErS

because we live on a place called EaRth.

SOURCE

Quite depressing, isn’t it?  Well it certainly can be if you let it. The reassuring part is that God knew life here would be difficult, and He wants to help lighten our load.  Sure, we could take the easy road and just be miserable until our life runs out.  But why not make the best of it while you are here?  Plus, by choosing to walk through life with Him, there will be more to look forward to when your days on Earth are over…HeAveN!

As an optimist, I am a believer that despite our challenges, we have to make the best of our HuMan lives.  How do we do that?  The obvious answer is ask God for help when you are struggling, and continue to speak to Him when days are good.  Talk to Him about your sins and ask for forgiveness when you feel guilty or know you’ve made a wrong choice.  And don’t forget to thank Him when things go your way!  When you develop this type of relationship with Him, the days won’t seem so lonely when EarThLy problems get thrown your way.  And when you feel more connected…the doors that He is opening for you will become more obvious!

Believe me, I know it is easier said than done.  But do we really have a better option?  If we are realistic with ourselves that life will consist of steady highs and lows (regardless of how hard we try to control it), why not have something CoNsTanT to lean on through it all?

Advent begins this Sunday.  There is no better time to start or enrich your relationship with God than now.  Here, on the Suede Sofa, we will be celebrating every day of Advent.  Check in daily between now and Christmas and join us as we prepare for the true meaning of Christmas!

Now is the time!  Make this the most meaningful Christmas yet!

In Christ,

Lara

Baby Blues to Baby Bliss

As I CeLebRate my son’s 4th birthday this week and my daughter’s 2nd birthday next month, I also celebrate the amazing gift of mOtherHood.  Always knowing that being a mom was the #1 goal of my life, I couldn’t understand why I was constantly crying after I brought my son home from the hospital.  Baby blues quickly turned to full blown postpartum depression.  Thoughts like, “What was I thinking when I wanted to have a baby,” “Am I ever going to have a conversation with my husband again,” and “I just want to be me again” raced through my head.
Feelings of shame, guilt, and fear felt like they were suffocating me.  I even thought my son might be better off without me.  I thank God for my wonderful  friends, family, and doctors for Getting Me throuGh my darkest moments.  With  therapy and medication I slowly got better and became the mother I so longed to  be.

Two years later I delivered my beAutiful baby girl and like a dark cloud drifting over me, my PPD was back.  As I held my daughter in my hospital bed, I  looked at my husband and said, “It’s back.”  You would think it would be easier  the second time but it was actually worse.  I knew the scary thoughts…I had  just lived them two years ago.  “Why me” was all I could think this  time.

Both bouts with PPD lasted about 2 months.  I try not to dwell on those days as time lost with my babies, but as times that made me FiGht to be the mother I am  today.  I now know that there is No ShaMe in having PPD, it wasn’t my fault that  I got it, and with help you can get through it.  Whether you or someone you know  is going through PPD or any obstacle, remember you CAN get through it and are  stronger than you think!

Who’s Your Rock?

Is the “rock” in your life a sister, coworker, friend, spouse, neighbor, child, or maybe your faith?  Who do turn to when you need good aDviCe or words of CoMfoRt? Are YOU a rock for someone?

Having a rock (or two!)  makes life EASIER.  My “rock” is someone that loves ME unconditionally, AccEpTs my faults and shines light on my strengths. My rock puts my mind at ease and alleviates any stress through their presence.  After a bad day, there is nowhere else I’d rather be than with MY ROCK.

Have you told YOUR ROCK how much you appreciate them lately?  It is easy to take for granted the people that help us most.  This week, try to do or say something special to your rock.   You never know, this SIMPLE ACT may be perfect timing to return the favor!

Packing List

I don’t know about you, but one of my least favorite things about taking a trip is packing. It takes me a lot of time and preparation and I just don’t like it.    However, I know if I want to have the most enjoyable trip/vacation possible I need to be prepared.   The journey on your way to your dreams is no different.  It requires a packing list that looks something like this:

  • “S.M.A.R.T.” dream:

S– Specific (You have to know exactly what it is you are going after)

M– Measureable (You must be able to measure your dream by asking, “Did I achieve my dream?” and then be able to answer with a simple “Yes” or “NO”)

A– Achievable

R– Relevant (It is something that you really want)

T– Time Specific (When are you going to reach your goal – give a specific date.)

  • SUPPORT SYSTEM this includes resources such as books, motivational materials, friends, family and someone that you can be accountable to
  • TRACKING SYSTEM to track your progress using a journal or calendar
  • BELIEF that you can and will do it
  • RELENTLESS PURSUIT to see your dream come to pass – Determination and grit that refuses to quit
