The Help

I need help.  We all need help.

On Thursday I talked about ways to hold yourself accountable when wanting to change an area of your life in my post Back to Reality. This applies to any area or time in our life.  We all have things we want to improve, but don’t know how to get there.  Where can you reach out for HELP?

One area of my life that I wanted to improve was my daily enthusiasm for deepening my faith.  I had been in a rut and didn’t know where to start. MY HELP this week has been listening to Christian music.  Let me tell ya, it is working!

I had originally tried diving into the bible, and to be honest, all I kept doing was staring at the words on the page.  At that point in time, IT WASN’T WORKING!  So if you can’t get momentum, keep trying until something clicks!  Maybe your new HELP will be a friend you aren’t thinking of, a new book, getting involved in a group/organization, researching the internet….explore ALL options! Don’t give up!

And in case you are where I am, below are some of my new FAVS!  Check them out, and SING and DANCE with me!!  (If you can’t see the video’s below, copy and paste the titles into youtube)

About a year ago I discovered Lara’s LeTTeR BloCk ShOp while searching Etsy.  I quickly became a huge fan of her work and started collecting block sets for each season and holiday.  Lara was always so CheeRfuL and FriEndLy in her messages and I became InsPiReD when I read that she was a teacher turned stay-at-home mom who opened her own shop.

Growing up I loved doing crafts and was always starting my own LittLe BusiNeSSes.  I sold potholders, friendship bracelets, and hand painted shirts to my family.  Fast forward about 25 years and I started thinking, “If Lara was able to open her own shop then why can’t I?”  I was also a teacher turned stay-at-home mom and was YeaRniNg for a way to turn my CrEaTiviTy into something I could be proud of and call my own.

I had been making banners out of felt for my own home for the holidays and with each new one I designed my mom would say, “You really need to sell these.”  With a leap of faith RoByN’s NeSt was opened on Etsy this past February.  I was honored to have Lara as my very 1st customer and am currently a few sales away from my 125th sale!

When trying something new or doing something you’ve always dreamed of…remember that InSpiRaTioN is EveRywHerE!

You Are Who You Hang Around

If you want your life to head in a certain diRection, you’ll get the best results by surrounding yourself with people that “liVe” the life you are striving for.

My husband I have found that ImProving our marriage, finances, parenting or how we treat other people, is much eAsiEr when we hang out with friends that push us to improve in all of these areas. Our friends don’t necessarily have to talk about these things, but simply hanging around them and observing their acTioNs keep us in check!

Are you hanging out with people that help you become a better “YOU”?  Are you being a good exaMple to your friends?  The people you spend the most time with will refLeCt the direction of your life.  What diRecTion are you headed?

Nine years ago this month I lost a very close friend to cancer.  Her name was FrAn.

I met Fran when I was in jr. high.  She moved to my small town of 300 people with her husband, BoB, who was our K-12 school’s superintendent.  They immediately became a part of our community and school.  Fran LoVeD people, music and God.  Actually, Fran just loved LiFe.  I have never met someone who was more PoSiTiVe and UpBeAt than Fran.

Due to budget cuts my senior year of high school, our music program was cut.  Fran stepped in and VoLuNtEeReD to be our vocal teacher.  She took our vocal class to music contest where we won 1+’s –  the highest score possible, not because we were incredible singers, but because we worked hard and were motivated to perform to the best of our ability for Fran.  Her love for music had RuBbEd Off on us.

The year I graduated from high school in South Dakota, Fran and her husband retired to a little resort island called “HoLiDaY IsLaNd” right outside of Eureka Springs, AK.  I was thrilled as my college plans were to attend college in Tulsa, OK, just 3 hours from Fran’s new home.  Bob and Fran extended the invitation for me to come visit them and I did so regularly.  In the course of 10 years I also took many of my FriEnDs along who, after a weekend with Bob and Fran, said they felt like they had known them all their life.  That was just the way they made you FeeL.

Fran (and Bob) treated us like her own daughters.  She bought us “SwEeT PillS” a.k.a. pastries, made us delicious meals, let us drive their golf cart to the pool (a block away), swam with us, rented and watched chic flicks with us, washed our clothes, and had good heart-to-heart “girl talks” with us.  Sleeping-in was the norm and when we finally rose out of our room we were greeted with Fran saying, “GoOd MoRniNg MeRrY SuNsHiNe!” a phrase I now use every morning when my girls come down the stairs.

Although Fran had been diagnosed with cancer, maybe before I was even in high school, she had always been so positive and proactive in treating her disease, I never worried about it.  She always seemed to be the picture of HeAlTh.

However, in 2001, when Bob passed away from prostate cancer I begin to notice she wasn’t quite the same.

On Friday of Memorial Day Weekend 2002, I received a call from Fran saying, the doctor’s had told her there was nothing more they could do.  She knew that she was in her final days and was at PeAcE.  A few days later I went to visit her to say  “good-bye”.  Less than two months later, I went to say my final “Good-Bye”.

Fran was an InSpiRing WoMaN.  She touched the lives of those who knew her.

I hope I can make an ImPaCt on others like Fran made on me.

“Smokin’ Hot!” – The Challenge (Wk 12)

Like it or not, the people you are hanging out with play a big role in regards to wHeRe and WhO you will be in 5 years.  Are the people in your life raising you up to help you fulfill your potential or dragging you down?  Are they inspiring, positive and motivating or are they negative and critical?  Do they seem to suck the life out of everything or are they LiFe-GiVinG?

My husband recently shared this quote with me:

“SmaLL pEopLe talk about other PeOpLe, AvEragE peOpLe talk about ThiNgS, GrEaT pEoPle talk about IdEaS.”

That’s one thing I really appreciate about Lara.  She’s an IdeA PerSon.  As a result, I get inspired.  Everytime I talk to her I feel like I am leaving “smokin’ hot” with new ideas!

Who are the people in your life who make you a better person?  Is it time for some new relationships?   Time for a new CiRcLe oF FrIeNdS?   Because you’re gonna blink and your 5 years will be up.

Two Things – The Challenge “Week 11”

I’ve heard it said before that there are TwO ThInGs that determine the person you will be in five years:  1.) the books you read and 2.) the people with whom you associate.  Week 11 of “The Challenge” focuses on the first element in this equation:

ThE BoOkS YoU ReAd.

I like to modify this factor to include all the input you receive whether that be by television, radio, internet, magazines, or other media sources.  This all can be summed up in one word:  “INTAKE”.  What does your intake look like?  Are you spending your time filling your mind with pointless and useless information or are you filling it with information that is moving you closer to your dream?  Would you say that the majority of your intake is InSpiriNg OR JuSt eNterTaiNing?  MotiVating OR meAniNgLeSs?

My latest read in the “pursuit of a dream” category is, “Put Your Dream To The Test” by John Maxwell.  If you’re looking for a good book on how to make a dream come true I would give it TwO ThUmBs Up!

It is definitely inspiring, as well as motivating and it will move you toward your dream!!

HaPpY ReAdiNg!!
