Okay for ME, but NOT for YOU…

I am hard on my kids.  Too hard, a lot of times, which always makes me regret it once I stop and think about how I’m treating them.  Instead of choosing my battles, I decide to take on every battle!  That is what SUPERMOM is all about, right?  Keeping a tight leash on your kids and setting the bar super high?  After some ReFleCtioN this week, maybe I should start looking for a new role model…

As Christians, we know how miserably we fail at numerous tasks and actions throughout our day, yet when we glance up at God we are reassured that He forgives and loves us no matter how much we are being a disappointment.  It is so comforting to know that when I make mistakes, at least someone still has my back…because HE knows we are human and are far from pErfeCt.

Yet WHY do I hold my kids to a different standard?  When they don’t do what I ask, or spill a cup FULL of pop on the floor, I repeatedly get on to them and ask why they didn’t listen or be more careful!!  Not only that, but I bring it up AGAIN when their Dad comes home and maybe even AGAIN before they go to sleep, in hopes that I am getting my point across!Scolding

When I make the same exact mistakes (just in adult form!), does God TrEaT me like that?  Never.  I always feel Him looking at me in a calm way, his eyes telling me that I need to pick myself up and go on.  I know I let Him down but I also know that once I acknowledge my weaknesses to Him, He moves on and doesn’t keep throwing it in my face. I really appreciate that about Him.

So why is it okay for me to fail God but not okay for others to fail me? As cHalleNgiNg as it will be, I am going to try to be as understanding and calm with my children as He is to me.  Sure, I’ll still get on to them and discipline when needed, but then I need to let it go and hope they make a better decision next time.  We know that kids won’t always do the right thing, but thankfully God doesn’t give up on us adults either!  With every year I get under my belt, I can see I’m going to need all the help and forgiveness I can get!

Are You Prayin’ About It?

Last night I was lying in bed thinking about a couple of things.  This was sMaLL stuff–you know–like how I was going to get everything done this week, if I had enough activities planned for the kids this summer, and if I was going to get the stain out of those tan pants :-/

All of a sudden, “Are you praying about it?” popped in my head.  For a second I pushed the thought away because I thought it was silly to pray about such minor things.  But then I remembered how Jesus wants us to talk to Him, no matter how great or small the worry may be.

praying hands

Are you worried about something?  Fretting over, what to most people, may seem like a silly little thing?  If it is a worry in your heart, then Jesus isn’t laughing.  Talk to Him.  Share your concerns and allow Him to CaRRy your load.  I am sure even He wouldn’t mind carrying a small load every once in a while :)

May Peace Be With You,

Lara

Our Twist On the Advent Calendar

One tradition our families have begun includes that of celebrating the arrival of Christmas with an Advent Calendar.  And although we love the excitement and anticipation that an Advent Calendar can bring, last year we tired of making the focus on giving our kids more stuff, even if it was as simple as a small piece of candy.

So we put our heads together and decided this year we wanted to do something different.  We wanted to focus on what Christmas is really about – giving and reflecting on the true meaning of this incredible holiday.

As I began to prepare for this post I did a little research on what Advent really means.  It turns out that I had a lot to learn about this subject from my Catholic friends (I know Catholics aren’t the only one who celebrate Advent.  They were just the ones I got my info from so I’m giving them credit.)

According to Catholicism.about.com and other sites, Advent really means “little lent” and should be a time of increased prayer, fasting (for some), good deeds, and penitence.  In layman’s terms it is a time for us to take stock of our lives.  To take a look inside and see if our heart is right with God.   As we approach Christmas with this attitude of humbling ourself it brings us peace and joy as well as a heightened sense of anticipation.

In the spirit of Advent, this year our Advent Calendar is going to consist of doing kind things for others and cherishing the moments we have with family and friends.  But most importantly it will consist of us preparing our hearts for Immanuel – God with us.

Each day from now ’til Christmas we will share with you ideas you can use to celebrate this season using the Advent Calendar.  Maybe you already have an Advent Calendar tradition.  Then go with it.  Or maybe you are looking for new ideas.  Hopefully you will find some here.  Our biggest piece of advice is to do what works for you and your family.  That may mean doing a handful of activities on the weekend when your family has more time to spend together and then skipping days during the week when your schedule is on overload.

You may choose to simplify the process big-time and do something as easy as  pick one person a day from now ’til Christmas and pray for them.  It doesn’t need to be time-consuming, stressful, or cost you anything.  Do what works for you and enjoy the season with the ones you love!!

If there are things your family does or if you have an idea to share, please do so!  We may even use your idea for one of our days!!

So, let’s get started!!

DaY 1 AdvEnT:  Send someone a card who has lost a loved one this year letting them know you are thinking about them/praying for them.

Happy Advent!!

:)Robynn

P.S.  If you don’t have an Advent Calendar, you may want to make one.  Choose one of the following or find one to make on www.pinterest.com by typing “Advent Calendar” in the search box.

Making the Best of Human Life…

Let’s face it.  Life on earth isn’t always easy.  In fact, most of the time is pretty challenging.  We deal with job losses, disappointments, cancer, troubled relationships, obesity, death, natural disasters; the list is never-ending.  We work so hard in attempt to cReAte and control an ideal surrounding, but nothing will ever be perfect…

because we are HuMaN

because we are SiNnErS

because we live on a place called EaRth.

SOURCE

Quite depressing, isn’t it?  Well it certainly can be if you let it. The reassuring part is that God knew life here would be difficult, and He wants to help lighten our load.  Sure, we could take the easy road and just be miserable until our life runs out.  But why not make the best of it while you are here?  Plus, by choosing to walk through life with Him, there will be more to look forward to when your days on Earth are over…HeAveN!

As an optimist, I am a believer that despite our challenges, we have to make the best of our HuMan lives.  How do we do that?  The obvious answer is ask God for help when you are struggling, and continue to speak to Him when days are good.  Talk to Him about your sins and ask for forgiveness when you feel guilty or know you’ve made a wrong choice.  And don’t forget to thank Him when things go your way!  When you develop this type of relationship with Him, the days won’t seem so lonely when EarThLy problems get thrown your way.  And when you feel more connected…the doors that He is opening for you will become more obvious!

Believe me, I know it is easier said than done.  But do we really have a better option?  If we are realistic with ourselves that life will consist of steady highs and lows (regardless of how hard we try to control it), why not have something CoNsTanT to lean on through it all?

Advent begins this Sunday.  There is no better time to start or enrich your relationship with God than now.  Here, on the Suede Sofa, we will be celebrating every day of Advent.  Check in daily between now and Christmas and join us as we prepare for the true meaning of Christmas!

Now is the time!  Make this the most meaningful Christmas yet!

In Christ,

Lara

{Banana.Nut.Bread} “Half-Baked”

I LoVe banana-nut bread.  LoVe It!  I don’t think I would put it in my top 3 favorites, but it’s up there.  However, when it comes to waiting for it to come out of the oven it tops ALL.  I just can’t help but to keep opening up the oven door, checking to see if it is done.  Maybe it’s because it is one of the few things you don’t have to let cool before you take a bite of it.  Maybe it’s because it MeLtS in your mouth.  Whatever the reason, I know that waiting the 1 hour for it to bake is going to be excruciating for me.  I have even tried taking it out of the oven before the 1 hour of baking time is up and here is what I have ObSeRveD:

1.) Banana-nut bread batter is YuMmY.

2.) Banana-nut bread that is piping hot out of the oven is even MoRe YuMmY.

3.) “HaLf-BaKeD” banana nut bread is nasty.  The only one who is eating that is WaLteR, our chocolate lab.

So, what’s the point, you may be thinking.  Well, this reminds me of life and how from time to time we find ourself in circumstances and situations (A.K.A. TriAls) that seem more than we can handle.  It’s as if the heat and pressure are turned up and no matter what we do, how much we pray, or how adamently we plead with God to “GeT Me OuT oF HeRe!” we’re not coming of the “FiRe” until his work is complete.  The crazy thing is how God can use something we think is so terrible to perfect us.  How did He do that?!

When you find yourself in this uncomfortable place remember that God has the AmAziNg AbiLitY to “work All things for His good for those who love Him.”  Romans 8:28.

So, although you may be squirming, HaNg On Baby!  Its not forever.  It just feels like it.  :)

P.S. One of these days I’ll share my Banana-Nut Bread recipe!

Click It! – The Challenge (Wk 19)

Have you found your SwEeT sPoT?  If you are still trying to figure that out, take a look at what “CliCks” for you.  Where do you seem to get good ReSuLts and in almost an UnCaNnY way things just work out for you?  It is sort of like jumping into a river and the CuRrEnT sweeping you downstream.  You may have to paddle a bit to stay on course, but there is an underlying FoRcE moving you forward.  Some people may refer to this as the stars aligning or just plain ‘ole luck, but I believe that finding your “sweet spot” will bring the FaVoR and pLeAsUrE of God in your life. When you find your “sweet spot” you find what God created you for and that brings God great DeLiGhT!

Find that thing that “cLiCkS” for you, that thing that brings so much sAtisFacTion to your soul that you feel as though you get “lost” in the moment and where time stands still.  Because when you get to the point that you can “click it” it may be that you have found your TiCkiT!
