What is the last thing on your mind before you fall asleep? Or when you have a lot of road time, what do you spend most of your time thinking about?
The reason I ask is because what people spend time and energy thinking about is usually what they are most passionate about. Yes, we can get consumed about “life” issues that take up a lot of our thoughts (worrying about kids, replaying embarrassing moments in our head). But with those things aside, what is usually on your mind? Are you aNxiOusLy brainstorming a new meal to cook that night? Envisioning the next vacation you want to take? Predicting how the sports season is going to turn out?
The cool thing about this question is that your answer may vary from year to year or even month to month. Want to know the most current thing “on my mind” these days? Interior design. I LOVE colors and furniture. I love changing the way a room looks and turning something junkie into something pretty. I can spend hours faNtiCiziNg about ways I could transform a space and can get lost in textures and fabrics.
Discover your hidden obsession by taking note of where your mind spends its time. Next, do something about it. I’m not saying you need to switch careers, but if you are only thinking of this great thing, why not take the first step and actually put it into practice. For me, it would be easy to find an excuse such as not having the funds or time to transform my house in the ways I’ve envisioned. BUT, in the meantime I can still get excited over small projects that don’t cost much and allow me to enjoy transforming a space or furniture piece.
If you can slowly act on these thoughts, you may find that they will become more and more of a reality. Five to six years ago I would daydream a lot about being my own boss. To my surprise, it soon became true and I’ve been living that dream for over 4 years. It didn’t happen overnight, but by actually applying some things on my mind, I ended up discovering new ways to make it happen.
Your passions may just be hobbies. They may turn into a career. They may be something that will make you money when you retire. You will never really know how they end up, but I can tell you one thing…they will always just be a dream if you don’t do anything more than that. And what fun is that when you could be LiViNg iT?!
Happy Dreaming ;)
A month or so ago I had the opportunity to speak to a group of CoLLeGe students about following their DrEaM and fulfilling their PoTeNtiaL. I took this trophy along and told them how I had wanted so badly to be named the MoSt VaLuAble PlaYer in BaSkeTbAll my senior year of high school. Instead, on awards night, I took home the “BeSt DeFeNsE” trophy. Defense always was my best asset. Still, it was a disappointment, even though I knew that award of Most Valuable rightly belonged to another PlAyEr.
The point I made by bringing this trophy along for my talk was that each person is the “Most Valuable ____________ (Fill in YoUr NaMe in the blank)” there is. There never has and never will be another person with the combination of GiFtS, TaLeNtS, teMpeRmEnt, and PerSonAlity that you have.
The question is: are you the best “YoU” that you can be or are you trying to be someone else? We do a lousy job of trying to be someone else, but when we fulfill our potential we become a truly UnIqUe oRiGinAl. If you are looking at others wishing you were more like them in LoOks, pErsOnaLity, tAleNts, etc, LeT iT Go! You were created for a unique PuRpoSe. There will NEVER be another you, so sit back, EnJoY yourself and take a load off your ShoUldErs wishing you were someone else!!
If you have a dream, how do you know it is LeGiT? One of the best pieces of AdViCe I have ever received is to “AlWaYs FoLLoW PeAcE.”
Peace is that knowing deep in your HeArT what is “RiGhT”.
And it will never lead you WrOnG.
This past SpRinG as I trained for a marathon I had a friend SuRpRiSe me with this necklace. On it is an engraving of the the word “BeLiEvE”, a runner, and May’s birthstone representing the month of the race. During the long winter months of training it was a constant ReMiNdEr of the finish line and what I was working so HaRd for.
In pursuing your dreams you may find it motivating to have something TaNgIbLe to stay focused on. It can be a PiCtUrE that you rip out of a magazine, a rock that you paint and use as a paperweight or whatever it is that InSpIrEs you. Find that thing that PoInTs you to your dream and DrEaM On BaBy!
I think I need to back up. We are on Week 13 of “The Challenge” where we are encouraging you to go for your dreams. But I know people my age and older who say, “Hey, hold on. I don’t know what my DrEaM is or where to even begin looking for my PurPoSe.”
If that describes you or even if you want to fine tune your dream consider this:
Your purpose is where your PaSsioN (heart’s desire) and your TaLenTs meet. In what area do you have high marks in both the passion category and the talent category? Maybe you don’t know the answer to this question. It may be that you have not yet discovered your talent, or your passion for that matter. However, when you do find them you have hit Bull’S-eYe. This is your “SwEeT sPoT”. For the next few weeks Suede Sofa is going to focus on finding your “sweet spot” a.k.a. your purpose.
Until next time ponder this question: Do you know your “sweet spot”?
I’ve heard it said before that there are TwO ThInGs that determine the person you will be in five years: 1.) the books you read and 2.) the people with whom you associate. Week 11 of “The Challenge” focuses on the first element in this equation:
ThE BoOkS YoU ReAd.
I like to modify this factor to include all the input you receive whether that be by television, radio, internet, magazines, or other media sources. This all can be summed up in one word: “INTAKE”. What does your intake look like? Are you spending your time filling your mind with pointless and useless information or are you filling it with information that is moving you closer to your dream? Would you say that the majority of your intake is InSpiriNg OR JuSt eNterTaiNing? MotiVating OR meAniNgLeSs?
My latest read in the “pursuit of a dream” category is, “Put Your Dream To The Test” by John Maxwell. If you’re looking for a good book on how to make a dream come true I would give it TwO ThUmBs Up!
It is definitely inspiring, as well as motivating and it will move you toward your dream!!
Whatever your dream, FiNd SoMeOnE who has already accomplished what you are desiring and learn everything you can from them. Have such a unique idea that you aren’t sure it has ever been done before? Then find someone who has had a unique idea of their own and then had to figure out how to bring it to pass.
The point is to find people who can InSpIrE and MoTiVaTe you. This can come from many sources – a magazine article or picture, a song, a book, a feature story or a documentary to name just a few. I remember my senior year of high school when the movie “HOOSIERS” came out during our girls basketball season. Some of my teammates and I went to see it. How motivating! Although that was years ago, I still get inspired when I see that movie which is probably one of my all time favorites.
Who inspires you? What is it that motivates you? What fuels your passion? Opportunities and resources await. Are you ready?
GeT InspiRed. Get MotiVated. Get drEaMing!
