Blessing and a Curse

No matter who you are or where you came from, we all have CharacTerisTics that can serve as a blessing and a curse.  Maybe you are GeneRous with money, which could cause you to struggle managing your finances. Maybe you are easy to get along with, but when it comes to standing up to people, you avoid conflict.

I have always been a planner.  This QuaLity is a huge asset when it comes to being a reliable source for others, organizing events and activities, or budgeting money.  On the other hand, being a planner is extremely hard in situations that are beyond your control and require you to “let go”.

It is easy to get down on yourself when you FocUs on the negative qualities of who you are.  No individual is perfect, and we all have qualities that are in constant need of polishing.  Acknowledging your weaknesses is a huge step in the right direction. Although it may always be a work in progress, you will be a BettEr person than if you’d never worked on it at all.

The Over-Rated “All”

I once heard a quote that said, “I would rather ShOoT for the StArS and HiT the MoOn, than shoot for nothing and hit it every time.”  Unfortunately, I can’t relate.  My natural tendency is to say, “Give me the stars or nothing at all, BaBy”  It’s insane, I know.  But I’m working on it.

If you have the “All-Or-Nothing” mindset, you know what I’m talking about.  You actually believe that PeRfeCtiOn is pOsSiBle, so while the world is passing you by you aimlessly grasp for the air.  Could it be that American poet Wallace Stevens was on to something when he said, “The ImPerFeCt is our PaRaDiSe”?  One way I overcome this mindset is to think about all the bLeSsiNgS in my life that I would not have had things gone according to my plans.

What pLeAsUrEs are unknowingly slipping right past you as you pursue an illusive “All”?

Many MoOns have passed without me getting to enjoy them, but not any more.  I’ve had the ReVeLaTiOn that “All” is OvErrAtEd.  I’ll still shoot for the stars, but if I miss them, I’ll take the moon, Thank-you. :)

“Enjoy The Journey Because, You’re Gonna Miss This” – The Challenge (Wk. 2)

You’re gonna miss this

You’re gonna want this back

You’re gonna wish these days

Hadn’t gone by so fast

These are some good times

So take a good look around

You may not know it now

But you’re gonna miss this

The above words are the chorus to country singer Trace Adkins’, “You’re Gonna Miss This”.  I’ll have to admit I get a little cHoKeD uP every time I hear this song or see the video.  It seems that we get so caught up in the future that many times we wish our lives away.

It’s so easy as you set out to accomplish a dream or make your life better in some way to get too focused on the destination and not EnJoY tHe jOurNey.  I can speak from experience that I don’t always “stop and smell the rOsEs”.  Maybe your life is far from perfect and to be perfectly honest, a big mess.  Maybe you are eyeing some pretty big challenges or seemingly impossible dreams that will take some time to overcome or achieve.

Remember this:  regardless of where you are on your journey, this is your OnE LiFe, the only one you get.  So take the time to enjoy the sWeeT PleAsuRes along the way because many of them are not permanent fixtures, but rather fleeting vapors.

What are the simple pleasures in your life?  A dear fRieNd?  A job you love, but that doesn’t pay that great?  Good health?  Relationships with family and friends?  Your children?  I know for me, I it will be a sad day when those flip flops get put on the right foot (and between the right toes!) 100% of the time.

The point is that where ever you may be on your journey, if you look around you can see GoD’s liTtLe  bLeSsinGs.  Embrace them, enjoy them, and savor them, because some day, you’re gonna miss this.

P.S.  A book that I really like regarding this topic is, “Enjoying Where You Are On The Way To Where You’re Going”by author Joyce Meyer.  In it she specifically talks about enjoying our self, as imperfect as we are, while God is changing us.  Not an easy thing to do.
