{Dog Heaven}

MaN’s BeSt FriEnD.  That’s what our dog, Walter, was to my husband, Scott.  They were best buddies.  Sadly, ‘ole Wally went to Dog Heaven yesterday.

I say “sadly”.  However, Walter did have a full life.  He was 12 years, 1 month, and 27 days old.  That’s 80-something in human years.  So, he actually lived a nice, long life.  And when I say “nice”, I mean ReALLy “nice”.  Wally definitely lived the high life, but he didn’t start off that way.

When Walter was just four-months old he got into rat poison which landed him in the vet hospital.  After a blood transfusion, a close brush with death, and an owner who couldn’t afford the vet bill, Wally was given to the vet.  The vet was friends with Scott and after a little PerSuAdiNg she talked Scott into taking Wally home with him.  And that is when it all began.

Little did Scott know what he was getting himself into.  Nor did he know the FriEnDsHiP that would transpire.

Yes, we would actually sleep with Walter on our bed like the above picture!

That first night together Walter gave Scott a little preview of what life would be like.  As Scott placed two steaks on the countertop for dinner and then turned his back to start the grill, Walter in a flash grabbed the steaks and they were gone.  When Scott went to put Walter to bed in the new dog bed he had just bought, Walter ripped it to shreds.  He wouldn’t settle for anything but Scott’s bed.  Walter had his own AgEnDa, to say the least.

When I met Scott, Walter was 2-years old, full of vim and vigor.  He was the most high-strung dog I had ever met.  He was ornery and demanding.  He helped himself to food on the counter.  {Once that was a crock pot of chili.}  However, he was also a LoVeR and not a fighter.  The night I went into labor with my oldest, I went downstairs to watch tv and record my contractions.  Walter came down with me and would not leave my side.  Once we did have kids, he became a willing participant of their antics in exchange for regular food hand-outs.

A FaiThFuL friend, Walter would look out the window everyday for Scott to come home.  As soon as he would see Scott’s vehicle pull in the driveway, he would run around the house like a crazy man.

In a nutshell, Walter was part of our family.

I bought this print a year or so ago because I knew it would be a reminder of Walter when he was gone.  This is the pose he sat in.

I’ll miss a lot about Walter.  That personality that was larger than life.  Hearing his tail ThUmP on the hardwood floor early in the morning signaling to me my girls were coming down the stairs.  {Or anytime you walked over to him, for that matter.}  The lover-boy he had become wanting to lay by your side and have you pet him.  The softest fur a dog could ever have.  The HaPpiEsT soul to see you when you walked in the door every day.

GoOd-ByE Wally.  We’ll miss you, old friend.

{What Enriches Your Life?}

Our dog, Walter does a lot of things.  Here are just a few…

Dog poses.

Kitchen clean-up during and after meals.

Water sports.

Winter sports.

Tea parties.

Statue Of Liberty poses.

Rudolph The Red-Nose Reindeer impersonations and he wishes you a Merry Christmas!!

This has been a silly post, so what’s the point?  (Not that there always has to be a point to all our posts.  Sometimes we may share something “just because”.)  However, I’ve shared pictures of our dog Walter because he truly enriches our lives.  What things in your life EnRiCh and EnHaNcEe your life?  Even when times are tough what things are a bright spot?  What things bring happiness?  Regardless of how your 2011 went, chances are you can find SoMeThInG you are thankful for - faithful friends, family, co-workers you enjoy, good neighbors, freedom, health, a job, hope, faith, another day.

Lara, Jersey Girl – Robyn and I are endeavoring to “Live-It”.  Regardless of what life hands us, we want to squeeze out every bit of enjoyment by savoring all the good.  Sometimes that good is hard to find.  Some times it’s interdispersed within the bad or uncomfortable.  But it’s there and we are gonna find it.  We hope you find the good in your life as well, because if you look hard enough you’ll find it.

:)

{Holiday Homes Tour}

This HoLiDaY Scott and I were asked if we would participate in our town’s Holiday Homes Tour to help raise money for a non-profit animal shelter, called the Castaways.   How could we say “No”?  WaLtEr our chocolate lab is a rescue dog.  So here is a sample of what people saw on the tour:

On the front porch were these chairs with a sign that said "LeT It SnOw". The weather man must have thought it said "Rain" rather than "Snow", and rain it did all day long!! However, it only added to the ambiance - cozy and warm inside with Lara's aromatic potpourri filling the house, Christmas music, lots of Christmas lights, and a crackling fire!!

The Front Door.

The Entry.

A greeting to all who visited!

Walter stole the show by sitting in this very spot all after noon with his reindeer head band. And yes, the K-State footbal game played (on mute) durng the open house! They won and are headed to the Cotton Bowl!! Yay!! - (I had to include that since Scott, Lara, and her husband, Doug are all K-State alums and very proud Wildcats!! :) )

What a sport!

Kitchen #1.

Kitchen #2.

Eating Nook.

Looking out on our back porch.

Staircase. (Sorry to state the obvious!)

Mud Room.

Master Bath.

Upstair Bath.

Girl's Bedroom.

Guest Bedroom.

In case you were hoping to see the Master Bedroom, that’s another post I will share in January (hopefully).  I spent a couple of months doing a room make-over and want to show you my finished product!!  StAy TuNeD!!

{Banana.Nut.Bread} “Half-Baked”

I LoVe banana-nut bread.  LoVe It!  I don’t think I would put it in my top 3 favorites, but it’s up there.  However, when it comes to waiting for it to come out of the oven it tops ALL.  I just can’t help but to keep opening up the oven door, checking to see if it is done.  Maybe it’s because it is one of the few things you don’t have to let cool before you take a bite of it.  Maybe it’s because it MeLtS in your mouth.  Whatever the reason, I know that waiting the 1 hour for it to bake is going to be excruciating for me.  I have even tried taking it out of the oven before the 1 hour of baking time is up and here is what I have ObSeRveD:

1.) Banana-nut bread batter is YuMmY.

2.) Banana-nut bread that is piping hot out of the oven is even MoRe YuMmY.

3.) “HaLf-BaKeD” banana nut bread is nasty.  The only one who is eating that is WaLteR, our chocolate lab.

So, what’s the point, you may be thinking.  Well, this reminds me of life and how from time to time we find ourself in circumstances and situations (A.K.A. TriAls) that seem more than we can handle.  It’s as if the heat and pressure are turned up and no matter what we do, how much we pray, or how adamently we plead with God to “GeT Me OuT oF HeRe!” we’re not coming of the “FiRe” until his work is complete.  The crazy thing is how God can use something we think is so terrible to perfect us.  How did He do that?!

When you find yourself in this uncomfortable place remember that God has the AmAziNg AbiLitY to “work All things for His good for those who love Him.”  Romans 8:28.

So, although you may be squirming, HaNg On Baby!  Its not forever.  It just feels like it.  :)

P.S. One of these days I’ll share my Banana-Nut Bread recipe!

{My Husband’s Therapist}

“ThErApiSts”  and can come in many forms.  For some it is a ProFesSioNaL who has spent years in school learning to HeLp others.  For others it is a trusted FriEnD or CoNfiDaNt.  For my husband it is our chocolate lab, WaLtEr.   One of my “therapists” is “RuNniNg.

If you are needing a BoOsT, maybe it is time to go to the person or thing that LiFts your SpiRiTs.

What is your “therapist”?

Suede Sofa Makes Road Trip To “Good Ju Ju”

On Friday, June 3rd, Lara and I took a road trip from our home in rural southeast Kansas to Kansas City about 2 hours away.  The purpose:  Shop at “GoOd Ju Ju” an antique shop in downtown Kansas City.  I was specifically looking for a table for my back porch.  Come along on our journey and see what I found!

We’re almost there!!

Lara poses in front of the Good Ju Ju sign as we wait for the doors to OpEn!!

Is that my TaBLe?!

Inside Good Ju Ju its packed with items and PeOpLe!!

What a fun time we had looking around.   (And I bought the blue bench/coffee table).

InTeReStInG FaCt:  Good JuJu is a top 5 FiNaLiSt in KC Magazines “CiTy BeSt” for“BeSt AnTiQuE ShOpPiNg”.   (You can find them on Facebook.)

After we visited Good JuJu we walked down the street and hit some of the other antique shops within walking distance.  What a fun time we had!

So now, for the coffee table:

Before photo of space:

And now for the finished space:

We have already had our first meal out there. I’m sure the first of many.

Happy Antique – ing!!

Meet Walter

LiFe LeSsOnS can come from many sources.

Meet WaLtEr.

This is our 11-year old ChOcOLatE lab.  When I got married he was part of the deal.  At first I wasn’t real thrilled with this bundle of energy.   He was not yet two-years old, a male (obviously), and came from a line of field champions.  Since that time I’ve come to love this dog.  In fact, I’ve never met another dog like Walter.  For one, he thinks he is human.  He acts like it too.  So much so, that when friends and family come over they just can’t help but laugh at him.  Whether it be helping himself to the crock-pot of chili on the counter and dumping it on the floor, opening a door, or escaping from several confinement scenarios, he always keeps us entertained.

You’ll hear more in the future from Walter, but for now he would like to leave you with his favorite quote.  It comes from WiNsToN ChUrChiLL:

“never, NeVeR, NEVER GiVe Up!”
