Biggest Bang For Your Buck {Cleaning/Organizing A Bedroom}

I always ask my girls when we go to clean their room what is the “biggest bang for their buck” to which they respond, “MaKinG oUr BeD.”  It’s always the first thing we do when we clean-up their bedroom.  And not only is it the thing that takes the least amount of time, it makes the room look 90% beTteR!  So, if cleaning and organizing isn’t your thing, but you are trying to do better in this area, this is a great starting point!  Not only will it make the room look significantly better, it may give you the boost you need to KeEp GoiNg!!

Biggest Bang For Your Buck {Take Stock}

From time to time its good for us to TaKe StOcK of our life.  Where we’ve been and where we’re going.  What has worked and what has failed.  What stays and what goes.

I find the end of the year is a good time for this.  January one is synonymous with new BegiNniNgs.  And here is the question I am pondering:

What OnE HaBiT (if I had it) would give the “biggest bang for the buck”?

Would that one habit be self-control/discipline, faithfulness, truthfulness, love, patience, kindness, diligence, perseverance, humility, better communication skills, or loyalty?

Chances are we all have that “oNe HaBiT” that (if we possessed it) would change the course of our life.   If you have trouble coming up with an answer ask yourself where you have the most conflict in your life.  It’s most likely in that area you could use some help.  Maybe its money problems; relationship problems; low self-esteem issues; or problems in your thought life, personal life or spiritual life.

As 2011 comes to a close, take some time to take stock of your life.  Are you headed down a path that will ultimately take you to your desired destination?  It’s well worth the InTroSpeCtiOn.

What’s your “One Habit”?

Biggest Bang For Your Buck – Buying Name Brand

Ever find something you really would like to buy, but don’t want to pay full price?  If so, try buying a floor model.  Stores have to move these items from time to time and usually do so at a discount.

This TabLe & cHaiRs, rUg and DollhOusE I found at a Potterybarn Kids store.  And best of all, they were all floor models.  I was able to get a 50% DisCouNt on the table & chairs and rug, as well as a 40% discount on the dollhouse.  I found all these buys in the summer and instantly I had a head start on my Christmas shopping!

Many times stores don’t advertise these discounts, so you may want to ask the sales clerk if there are any discounts on FlOoR mOdEls.  I was browsing and just happened to be looking at pricetags.  Another option is to put your name on a WaiTiNg LiSt for a floor model that you are interested in.  I have done this before and although you may have to wait for a few months or longer, you may be able to land a really GoOd DeaL.  Of course, there are no guarantees your name will be the top name on the list, but it’s worth a shot.

So next time you fall in love with a piece of furniture or household item that you don’t want to pay full price for, give it a try and see if you can’t land a great deal.  It may take PaTieNcE, but it will be worth it.

BBFYB: Avoiding Skin Cancer & Hearing Loss

With the FuN summer hOlidAy around the corner, get your biggest bang for your buck by packing along your sunscreen and earplugsDon’t underestimate the ImpAct of being in the sun for a picnic or surrounded by a few fireworks crackling in your ears. Someone once told me that any noise over 85 decibels causes hearing loss.  For example, a lawnmower makes noise at 90 decibels. Keep this in mind when the kids are outside or near other sounds at similar volumes. Prolonged exposure of the sun and noise can cause problems later in life and ProTectiNg yourself from these potential issues only takes a second!

Have a SAFE holiday!

Biggest Bang For Your Buck – Adirondack Chairs

Adirondack chairs are really popular these days and it seems like the going rate for these chairs is around $250 a piece.  I really wanted to get two white chairs, but didn’t want to pay $500 so I began looking around.   Here’s what I found:

These nice wood chairs were $99 from Home Decorators.  Their website is www.homedecorators.com      They were a cinch to put together.

If you don’t mind doing a little painting, these wood chairs from Home Depot are a steal for $29.88.  You can find them at www.homedepot.com

I was looking for a couple of chairs for a tree grove in front of my house and these plastic Adirondack chairs from Walmart were perfect.  The white and red chairs were $15 and the blue chair was $14.

Enjoy the view!

Biggest Bang For Your Buck — BE the BARBER

One of my best investments was a $25-$30 haircut kit from Target.  I bought it shortly after my husband and I got married 5 ½ years ago and I’ve cut his hair ever since!  Owning a hair clipper has not only  saved us money, but it also SAVES my husband a lot of TIME if we can cut it in the evenings or weekends instead of having to schedule an appointment or wait in line at a barber shop. Now that we have a son we can save money on his haircuts as well!

I’m obviously not comfortable cutting my own hair (although there was about 6 months that I had my husband cut mine!), so my daughter and I get ours professionally cut.  Keep in mind that there are many salons that give you cheaper rates if you come with your hair already washed and wet.  It SAVES them time and MONEY if they don’t have to wash and style it for you.  The women in your family can save a few dollars too!

Does the thought of cutting a guy’s hair make you cringe?  Don’t worry! It is not as hard as it looks. There are haircut kits that come with an instructional DVD which can be helpful. My best AdvicE is to always start with the thickest blade guard and then go down from there (until you get the hang of it).  Even if you do make a mistake (which I have made a time or two), it isn’t the end of the world.  The guys just get a shorter-than-normal hair style for the next 4 weeks  Ü

Biggest Bang For Your Buck – Toned Arms

S  u  M  m  e R   is just a month away!  This is what works for me when it comes to toned arms…

I’ve never had naturally ToNeD aRmS, but being a farm girl who would spend her summer days bailing hay I would have defined arms at the end of each summer.  After I got a teaching job and no longer spent my summers on the farm I looked for an alternative to getting toned arms – lifting weights.

A fitness magazine had promised me toned arms if I would do their exercises 15 minutes a day, 3 times a week.  I began doing these arm exercises using dumbbells and weight machines.  After a few months of this regimen the results were, well, disappointing.  I could barely tell any difference.  So I came up with my own plan:  PuShUpS.

When I started out doing pushups I had to do them on my knees.  Because my upper body had never really been that strong, I could not do many in a row without resting, but I pLuGgEd AwAy.  I did this for three weeks and was very happy with the results, so much so that I decided I would do 75-pushups each day.

I don’t actually do 75-pushups a day, but that is my goal.  Sometimes it may be 3 times a week, sometimes 5, something is better than nothing.  I can’t do all 75 at once and so I break it down.  Now I have something that not only works, but takes only a few minutes each day.  I cAn HaNdLe ThAt. =)
